Today is the opening of Helsinki Design Week, the largest design festival in the Nordic countries. The festival will take place in Helsinki from 6 to 16 September and it will spread around the city. The HDW, established in 2005, will feature a variety of design, fashion, architecture and urban culture. The festival program includes about 250 events which attracted a total of 161,000 visitors last year.

Aalto University students, teaching staff and alumni are involved in numerous events this year: Exhibitions, design innovations, bringing smart design and intelligent textiles into everyday life, artwork transported to your door - and much more.

Artek and Forbo Linoleum celebrate over eight decades of close industrial partnership by inviting Aalto University Master’s Degree Programme in Furniture Design students to experiment with wood and linoleum. Under the theme of Hospitality, the future designers have been challenged to create products that express what hospitality and hosting is all about: trust, generosity and goodwill. The finished projects include products as varied as serving trays, cabinets, coat hangers, coffee tables and several other material experimentations.

SCOOT – Reinventing Urban Mobility exhibition showcases seven functional electric scooter concepts designed and manufactured by Aalto master’s students from the Collaborative and Industrial Design programme. The concepts were done as a part of the Form Exploration course and in collaboration with the Finnish electric scooter manufacturer Meeko. The concepts challenge the current electric scooters with their elegance and functionality, and showcase new solutions for urban mobility.

EMOVEO is a collective exhibition about contemporary design movements from young people's point of view. The exhibition is linked to time and place: moving from Arabia to Otaniemi, experiences at the dawn of graduation, and the transformation of the design sector in the midst of global changes. The name of the exhibition means moving or shifting, and its key themes are change, migration and related emotional reactions. The works of the students deal with physical transitions as well as with movements of mind and making.
