Aalto University’s screenwriting research presented in the United States

06.09.2013

Teachers and researchers of the Department of Film, Television and Scenography, Marja-Riitta Koivumäki, Raija Talvio and Riikka Pelo presented their research at the 6th conference on screenwriting research held this year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The theme ”Screenwriting in a Global and Digital World” gathered more than 200 participants from around the world. The conferences culminated in the Annual General meeting of the Screenwriting Research Network where Coordinator Kirsi Rinne was elected for the second time as a chair of the executive. The executive consists of six scholars from England, Germany, Belgium, Chile and Austria.

Marja-Riitta Koivumäki’s presentation dealt with dramaturgical approach as a basis of practice-based research,  Raija Talvio compared a popular Finnish film ”Juurakon Hulda” to its Amerikan re-make, the ”Farmer’s Daugher” and Riikka Pelo described her screenwriting method based on rhythmic dramaturgy. A representation from Aalto ARTS was this year complemented by Tiina Kymäläinen’s presentation ”Using Narratives for Constructing Intelligent Environments”.

University of Wisconsin-Madison is a leading university in film studies. World-famous theoreticians David Bordwell and Kristin Thomson belong to its faculty as does Professor JJ Murphy, one of the founders of the Screenwriting Research Network.

The network actively promotes this new field of research. Intellect started to publish  a refereed Journal of Screenwriting in 2009 and two years ago Palgrave Macmillan launched a book series on the subject. Koivumäki’s and Talvio’s presentations from the previous conference in Sydney will be published in the forthcoming journal in September.
