Jouni Sarpola’s research Space Fleet, Corn and a Few Other Public Sculptures at the Turn of the Millenium is concentrating on contemporary Finnish public sculpture and its adjacent areas like Site-Specific art and environmental art. The main targets of his research are four public sculptures from the following artists: Markus Copper’s Big Bang Echo (2000), Kimmo Schroderus’s Hyöky (2004–2006) and Pekka Jylhä’s Revelation (2000) and My way (2012. Interviews with the artists and the works mentioned are used as research material.
Sarpola is exploring how the transformation of public space, experiencing of public art and discourse about public art affected to the presentation of contemporary public art. The purpose of the research is to produce new information and written tools to review contemporary public art. The aim is to validate the idea public sculpture being a dynamic part of contemporary art in spite of a many paradigm turnovers. In this way this research may be a useful part of contemporary art discourse.
