Riikka Mäkikoskela’s thesis aims at interpreting and analyzing the visual art practice. It structures and conceptualizes the art-making processes, in which a three-dimensional artwork evolves. In such circumstance, it is essential that the work of art can be traversed in or around, because the artwork as a whole and its meanings cannot be comprised from a single viewing point. As a result, the three-dimensional art practice consists of series of events, in which the author perceives in motion.
Mäkikoskela phenomenologically explores how the bodily, material and spatial thinking appears in the visual art practice. She examines her experiences in the context of traditions, methods and theories within the historical, social and cultural practice of three-dimensional art-making. The research material of the artistic research has been presented in two exhibitions and in one research presentation. The fourth part of the study, the book, collects up the practice and theory of the dissertation.
