In this presentation Professor Mirka Koro-Ljungberg will work against given, stable, rigid, and predetermined methodological structures and discuss fluid methodological spaces. Fluid methodological spaces are ‘post-spaces’ where spatial and methodological structures as well as labels collapse and where multiple things and methods occur simultaneously. Furthermore, in these fluid spaces frameworks and methodological foci are diverse and continuously changing. In this presentation she will also provide examples of research designs and methodological flows with varied research objects, practices, enactments, and ways of representing realities. From this perspective “methods” and “tools” are not methods and tools in their stable meaning or rigid structures but ‘methods and tools’ begin and end in an unforeseen and unpredictable “order,” forming incomplete methodologies without absolute identities or nonidentities. Methods and tools are conceptualized as temporary structures that are being regenerated again and again. Following this line of thought, methodological flows, tools, approaches, or techniques melt, transform, circumvent, infiltrate, appear, and disappear while opening up new directions for qualitative research.
Mirka Koro-Ljungberg (Ph.D., University of Helsinki) is a Professor of qualitative research at the Arizona State University. Her scholarship operates in the intersection of methodology, philosophy, and socio-cultural critique and her work aims to contribute to methodological knowledge, experimentation, and theoretical development across various traditions associated with qualitative research. She has over 70 peer reviewed publications in various qualitative and educational journals and she is the author of Reconceptualizing qualitative research: Methodologies without methodology (2015) published by SAGE.
