Vernissage on Monday 18 June 2018 19.00-21.00! Welcome!

Dark Days, White Nights is the InSEA Congress  exhibition, opening a platform for artistic participation in the congress with its emphasis on the dialogue between academic and artistic practice.

The exhibition title refers to two thematic schemata. First, in Finland, conditions of light vary widely according to the season. North of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set around midsummer and does not rise at all during midwinter. Light and the lack of light define the conditions of human existence to a great extent.

Secondly, Dark Days, White Nights refers to the ongoing changes in the world. Coincident with the rise in the number of refugees, right-wing populism has become stronger than ever since World War II. In this way, the title can be taken as a social, psychological and political metaphor.

Dark Days, White Nights encourages wide interpretations of the title and a variety of critical artistic approaches. How do we experience light as a condition of life and as an environmental living condition? How does art reflect cultural and political changes locally and globally? In line with the congress themes, the exhibition focuses on cultural diversity, post-humanism and eco-justice.

You are warmly welcome to join us in the vernissage of Dark Days, White Nights!

From the exhibition: FEEL sur REEL

Collective vernissage on Monday 18 June 2018 19.00-21.00, starting jointly from beta SPACE. Welcome!

Artistic Interventions, the exhibition program of InSEA 2018, consists of the curated exhibition for the InSEA congress, Dark Days, White Nights, and of artistic contributions from children and young people, from graduate students in art education and art and design, and from other artists and scholars around Finland. The exhibitions approach the congress themes and the essence of intervention from artistic perspectives. Dark Days, White Nights gathers together an international range of artists and discusses the very specific natural conditions of the arctic area, as well as the broader transformation in our culturally changing world. The other exhibitions are a review of the Finnish art education scene by discussing social and communal norms and power structures, the interconnectedness and multilayeredness of the reality, and the thoughts and paths taken by today’s youth. The program presents five exhibitions in total that take place in various locations at Aalto University Otaniemi Campus.

You are warmly welcome to join us in the celebration and the collective vernissage of the exhibitions!

Behind the Greek fables of Aesop, there lies a life experience reflecting a pessimistic life wisdom, a practical philosophy for the meek. The constructive virtues such as diligence and honesty are rarely praised in the fables. The little have to survive in the world with flexibility and wiliness. In Academic Fables, we want to present truths particularly with the voice of the oppressed and the undervalued. In our fables, we want to laugh at ourselves more than at others. We work as artists and as university lecturers at the University of Tampere. Life in the university is a constant uncertainty, a struggle to maintain one’s position. We have worked the material into visual and conceptual artworks, which have come about in a dialogue, and will be displayed in the InSEA congress, in Espoo.
